Sri Lanka regrets removal of Viktor Yanukovych
The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday expressed regret over the removal of Viktor Yanukovych.
An External Affairs Ministry statement said that in keeping with Sri Lanka's consistent policy of recognising democratically- elected heads of state, the unconstitutional removal of President Viktor Yanukovych from office is regretted and has aggravated the present political uncertainty in Ukraine.
"While acknowledging the justifiable concerns of the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka also welcomed attempts at de-escalating the tension," the statement said.
Sri Lanka is confident the parties concerned would be able to resolve the issues arising out of the recent developments, through a legitimate democratic process, enabling harmonious co-existence of the people of Ukraine, Xinhua reported.
Also on Wednesday, Kyrgyzstan said it was concerned by events in Ukraine but no longer recognised the ousted Viktor Yanukovych as president, AFP reported.
