SPECIALTY TOOL
Belt tension gauge
When checking belt deflection:
●
●
Set belt tension at tightest point in belt.
Measure belt deflection with no rider or cargo on motor-
cycle, transmission in neutral, belt and sprockets at
ambient temperature (cold engine) and motorcycle rest-
ing on jiffy stand.
1.
See Figure 1-39. Obtain BELT TENSION GAUGE (HD-
35381-A).
NOTE
Customers may purchase belt tension gauge from an autho-
rized Harley-Davidson dealer.
2.
To use the belt tension gauge:
a.
b.
c.
Slide O-ring (4) toward 0 ft-lbs (0 kg) mark (3).
See Figure 1-40. Note belt position in viewing win-
dow (2) relative to deflection graduations (3).
See Figure 1-39. Fit belt cradle (2) against bottom of
drive belt approximately half-way between drive
sprockets.
Press upward on knob (6) until O-ring slides down to
10 lbs (4.5 kg) mark (5).
See Figure 1-40. Note belt position in viewing win-
dow (2) relative to deflection graduations (3) while
holding gauge steady.
d.
e.
Deflection graduations are 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) apart. To
measure belt deflection, count the number of gradua-
tions between original belt position in step 2.-b. and the
belt position in step 2.-e. Multiply this number by 1/8 in.
(3.2 mm).
