Ye, you are quite right, the word series is more preferable to use. Also one can use the term sitcom (situation comedy) which suits here and is widely used today in mass media.

By the way I`m a big TV Series fan.

All TV Series are partitioned in such formats -

1. 2-4 Series.
2. 10-14 Series.
3. 20-25 Series (usually it`s called "season", such TV Series have several seasons which are in air on TV for Fall-Spring time).
4. 100-300 Series (usually it`s called "soap opera").
5. 1000 and over Series (the same thing).

And in USA there is some TV Series which in air from 1957 year.

And this is wrong that anglo world does not use it as we do use it.

Because modern english has a lot examples when some term could be the noun and adjective in the same time —

yes - this is "federal".
Federal as adjective - federal government, federal laws, and so on.
And the federal as staff of some gov`s organization. Most well-known is FBI and CIA.
The amers say offently in short way - "feds".
