Samsung has upped the ante in the camera phone market with the introduction of the SPH-2300, sporting a 3 megapixel camera with optical zoom.
While most camera phones hover around 0.3 megapixels and a few are just starting to appear in the 1 megapixel range, Samsung has introduced a new phone that blurs the lines between phone and camera, the SPH-2300.
A nominally candybar style phone, the SPH-2300 features the usual phone functionality on one side, including a large color LCD screen. The buttons have been reorganized to make using the other side of the phone easier, however. From the "back", the SPH-2300 resembles a number of standalone digital cameras on the market. That includes an extending lens with optical zoom, extremely rare for a phone. Although not the first 3 megapixel camera phone on the market, the SPH-2300 is the first with an optical zoom.
Of course, the phone includes a flash, and also includes a mini-SD slot for storing pictures. The phone can also record video clips. Aside from the phone functionality, that puts the SPH-2300 up against many mid-range standalone cameras in the 3 megapixel range.
Availability and pricing for the SPH-2300 is not currently available. It is possible that the phone will not be available outside the Asian market, as many such devices remain in that market as test-bed devices, the features of which later end up in other products for the world market.
